Gender gap in the Ukrainian labor market: research by the International Organization for Migration

 

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has significantly impacted the labor Overall employment  market and deepened existing gender gaps in employment.

According to a new study by the International Organization

for Migration (IOM) published in November 2024! women face producers experiences numerous much greater challenges in accessing work and maintaining economic activity compared to men. Internally displaced women and single mothers are particularly vulnerable.

As of August 2024! the employment rate among the working-age population (18-60 years old) was 67%! which is 6 percentage points lower than the pre-war period. At the same time! there is a significant gender gap – 72% of working-age men are employed! while Overall employment  only 63% of women are.
The most striking difference is in the level of self-employment – 15% among men versus 8% among women! which indicates the presence of gender barriers to female entrepreneurship. IOM experts note that this trend may indicate limited access of women to financial resources and the necessary knowledge to start their own business.

The particularly vulnerable situation of IDPs

The most difficult situation is observed among internally make your searches in private tab displaced persons (IDPs). The gender gap in employment among IDPs reaches 23 percentage points – 71% of men and only 48% of women are employed. In comparison! this gap is much smaller among the local population.

A quarter (25%) of working-age IDP women reported being on maternity leave (10%) or aol email list engaged in household and childcare (15%). Among IDP men! this figure is only 3%.

The situation is particularly difficult for IDP women aged 25-35 – 39% of them are exclusively engaged in household chores and childcare. This is explained by the fact that among IDPs there is a significantly higher percentage of single mothers with children under 5 years old (21%) compared to the local population (10%).
